NETTA PLAYING AND UMPIRING RULES
Goal post adjusted to a height of 2.4m (8ft)
Game ball size 4
Players must release the ball within (6) seconds of catching the ball (when
umpiring if it is getting close to 6sec call out something like "pass
the ball").
Players may shuffle their feet after catching the ball. No large forward movement
is allowed. Please use Common sense. Talk to the players during the game (ie "keep
your feet still", "don’t move your feet after you catch the
ball", "watch your feet", etc). DO NOT STOP THE GAME AND CALL
PLAYERS INTO A CIRCLE AND EXPLAIN THE RULES (THAT IS THE COACHES ROLE) JUST
HELP THEM ON THE RUN.
Players may only be defended by one opposition player (ie one on one)- No double
Defending is allowed. (Just call out something like "get back player you
can't all stand there with your arms up in the air).
Distance allowed for defending another player is 1.2m (4ft) everywhere on the
court. Just blow your whistle tell the defending players to get back further
- show them where - and let play go on. NO ONE is out of play (ie player who
makes a mistake DOES NOT stand next to the player taking the penalty pass as
is the case with netball).
Shots for goal may not be defended. Just, either blow your whistle and tell
defending player they cannot defend a shot for goal of call out to the player " don’t
defend the player turn around and go for the rebound".
Contact rule is as per the rulebook. Blow whistle and tell the player you cant
push, bump, hit or hit the ball our of the players hand, or whatever it is
they are doing to cause contact - don’t put the player out of play, then
allow play to continue.
If the ball passes through the top netball ring it is a goal whether it passes
through the bottom netta ring or not - we have another centre pass.
Remember to sound confident the kids are looking to you to help them to learn
the rules too.
Recommendations
Players should interchange every quarter/half.
Players should play a minimum of two quarters per week.
Player should play every position on the court throughout the
season. Rotation schedules may be found in the coaching
manual.
Coaches introduce yourselves to the umpire. You must stay in the same position
each quarter - do not run up and down the sideline. You can not coach from
the baseline.
Coaches are advised to coach the children to play the 'open' netball rules
of the game not netta relaxation of the rules. Naturally coaches will coach
the skills of the game to the appropriate level of the development of the child.
It is only the rules which have been relaxed to allow the children to enjoy
the game.
Parents should be asked to cheer, clap and encourage all children on the court
BUT NOT COACH - too many voices telling the children what to do will only confuse
them.
No spectator, reserve player, coach, team official, friend or anyone else should
position themselves along the baseline. They may interfere with the umpire's
positioning and can be distracting to the players.
What you need:
A whistle
Something to keep track of which team has the centre pass. Maybe swap a ring
from one hand to the other, a sweatband from one wrist to the other.
A coin to toss for ends with the captains.
